There are also small buttons at the top of the screen for quickly changing pages.

  • "Local Servers (via WiFi)" section now uses Bonjour to find local AFP, SFTP, FTP and HTTP servers, in addition to WebDAV servers
  • iCloud's Publish button now works for publishing several files at once
  • Back to reading button on Manage Files control panel now instantly takes you to the last read file, there's no need to locate this file in a file list first
  • by popular demand, we're enabling syncing a single local file/folder to several remote ones. Such unpredictable practice is strongly discouraged, so you must explicitly enable it in settings.
  • iOS 3.x is no longer supported. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we're too dependent on iOS 4 features now.

Other small but nice improvements:

  • "New TXT" button now asks for a file name before creating a file
  • "New Folder" and "New TXT" buttons are always active now, there's no need to enter the file management mode in order to use them
  • tapping and holding on a file now instantly enters the file management mode and selects this file
  • tapping and holding on a found file on Find Files control panel now opens this file's parent folder, as opposed to opening the file itself after a simple quick tap
  • the option to ignore system files and folders with names starting with a dot, both for local files and remote servers, is now available in settings
v.3.12.1
  • AFP connections + AFP Auto Sync. Use AFP protocol to connect to shared folders on a Mac, to Apple Time Capsule, and to other AFP-enabled NAS drives.
  • "Local Servers (via WiFi)" section now uses Bonjour to find local AFP, SFTP, FTP and HTTP servers, in addition to WebDAV servers
  • Sync button now also appears on the root screen of the app and under every Actions menu in the file browsing mode. Now you don't have to go all the way back to Web Downloads just to make a sync.
  • Publish button found under the Actions menu can now be used to publish one or several iCloud files at once

  • tapping and holding on a file now instantly enters the file management mode and selects this file
  • tapping and holding on a found file in Find Files window now opens this file's parent folder, as opposed to opening the file itself after a simple quick tap
  • the option to ignore system files and folders with names starting with a dot, both for local files and remote servers, is now available in settings
iPad + iPhone
v.3.11.0, 3.11.1
  • Unrar for RAR archives, including multi-volume archives
  • public key authentication for SFTP connections
  • "Downloads" folder can now be disabled in settings
  • by popular demand, we're re-enabling the "Textured background" switch in app settings for PDF files
  • closing an active file tab now actually closes the file
  • fixed the issue with unzipping certain kinds of very large ZIP archives

v.3.10.2, 3.10.3
  • fixed the issue with occasional crashes when annotating a PDF file inside the iCloud folder
  • the behaviour of the Downloads folder has been changed, thanks to the new Apple's data storage feature appearing in iOS 5.0.1. As of iOS 5.0.1, the Downloads folder will not be purged by the system in low disk space situations, and it will not be backed up to iTunes or iCloud (please note that if you're using iOS version prior to 5.0.1, this folder may be backed up, eating up your backup disk space).

v.3.10.0, 3.10.1

Text Lookup for PDF files. Select a text in a PDF file and use the magnifying glass button on the popup menu to find this text in:

  • Dictionary (iOS 5 or later)
  • Google (iOS 4 or later)
  • Wikipedia (iOS 4 or later). Select your preferred language for Wikipedia in app settings, Other Settings section.

Other improvements:

  • to comply with Apple's new Data Storage Guidelines, a special Downloads folder is now used as a default location for files downloaded with the web browser (on iPad this default behaviour can be changed in settings). This folder doesn't get backed up to iTunes or iCloud, resulting in smaller backup sizes and shorter backup times. Use this folder for files that can be easily restored or redownloaded in case of a loss. However, if a file can't be easily redownloaded, please move it out of this folder, so it will be backed up during your next backup session.
  • adopted Google Docs API changes for uploading files
iPadiPhone

v.3.8.0
  • File Tabs - switch between recently viewed files without going back to the file list view

  • new way of creating PDF markups (highlights, underlines, etc.) with the new Side Menu - to markup a text, draw over it with your finger
  • Delete local files option for "download-only" sync gets rid of outdated files that are gone from a server

Other improvements:

  • "Free 5GB SugarSync Account" button in the SugarSync connection parameters window lets you create a free new account in case if you haven't got one
  • PDF's Freehand drawing mode now lets you change color, thickness and opacity while drawing
  • redesigned PDF Page Slider (now it also includes Page Up and Down buttons)
  • PDF password for a file is now memorized for as long as you keep a file on the file tab panel and don't leave the app.
  • files can now be starred and unstarred on the Find Files control panel
  • better support for iPad 2 native video mirroring - now you simply have to plug the video cable into an iPad 2, and native video mirroring will be activated right away (the "old style" video output, the one without the menus, can still be activated by using the "Video Out" button on the main screen of the app)
v.3.9.1
  • iOS 5 compatibility fix
  • iCloud support (iOS 5 or later)

Other improvements:

  • Data Protection can now be enabled for all files, even if there is no app or file password being used (this option needs to be explicitly enabled in settings)
  • AirPlay is also enabled for audio files now (iOS 4.3 or later)
  • PDF Annotations deletion confirmation dialog can now be disabled in settings
  • Web browser password now also locks the "Enter URL" feature

v.3.8.1
  • File Tabs - switch between recently viewed files without going back to the file list view. You can turn file tabs off in app settings, if you think that they occupy too much precious screen space.
  • Delete local files option for "download-only" sync gets rid of outdated files that are gone from a server

Other improvements:

  • "Free 5GB SugarSync Account" button in the SugarSync connection parameters window lets you create a free new account in case if you haven't got one
  • PDF's Freehand drawing mode now lets you change color, thickness and opacity while drawing (in landscape mode only)
  • redesigned PDF Page Slider (now it also includes Page Up and Down buttons)
  • PDF password for a file is now memorized for as long as you keep a file on the file tab panel and don't leave the app.
  • files can now be starred and unstarred in the Find Files window
iPad + iPhone
v.3.7.0, 3.7.1
  • fully redesigned popup menus for PDF Annotations - many actions can now be performed with less taps
  • "Unflattening" of flattened PDF files. This option is disabled by default, you have to explicitly enable it in settings. If you enable it, all PDF files that you flatten can later be unflattened by your recipients, so all flattened annotations would become editable again. Unflattening can only be done in GoodReader app, and it only applies to files previously flattened by another copy of GoodReader with unflattening option explicitly enabled on a device that was used for flattening. Any editing of a flattened file makes flattening final and further unflattening impossible.
  • better handling of audio remote controls (play/pause button on a headset and soft buttons on multitasking bar, iOS 4.0 or later)

v.3.6.0, 3.6.1
  • Data Protection. Now GoodReader takes advantage of iOS's ability to encrypt individual files to make sure your data is secure even if your device gets lost or stolen. ATTENTION!!! Special procedures need to be performed (and also some limitations apply). Be ABSOLUTELY sure to read the "How-To" manual on Data Protection, if you want to use this feature.
  • Flatten PDF annotations. Now you can flatten your PDF files to embed annotations into the main PDF page body. This will make them visible in all PDF-capable apps (including Mail and Safari), regardless of those apps' inability to display PDF annotations. This also makes your annotations non-editable, which may be useful if you want to prevent your notes and drawings from being altered by someone else. "Flatten" option is also available when sending files from GoodReader via EMail or via "Open In..." menu. GoodReader does the "smart flattening" - it preserves all existing PDF hyperlinks, while flattening notes and drawings.
  • symbolic PDF page labels are now supported. Use symbolic labels (i, ii, iii, etc.) to go to a page. This also addresses the issue when logical page 1 in a PDF document doesn't correspond to physical page 1.
  • PDF Annotations: improved compatibility of Typewriter notes and text boxes with Mac's Preview app and Google Docs online viewer. All advanced properties (callouts, cloudy border, etc.) created in GoodReader should now be visible in those apps
  • video files can now be played via AirPlay (iOS 4.3 or later)
  • fixed the issue when only one audio track was played in the background
  • improved connection to certain Microsoft IIS / Sharepoint WebDAV servers
  • improved handling of untrusted server certificates when connecting to secure WebDAV, IMAP and POP3 servers
  • faster syncing of large amount of small files with some secure servers (iDisk, Dropbox, SugarSync, etc.)
  • faster SFTP downloads
  • more stable SugarSync connection

v.3.5.0, 3.5.1
  • accessing SFTP servers + SFTP Sync
  • new type of sync - "Download only" sync. This type of sync doesn't care what happens with your local files, it never puts anything on a server, never deletes anything from it, it only looks for fresh remote files and downloads them. Great for centralized document distribution to a group of people, when documents are frequently updated.
  • PDF Annotations: font size can now be changed for text boxes and Typewriter tool

Other improvements:

  • PDF Annotations: Typewriter tool now respects page rotation
  • more stable Dropbox connection
  • Sync feature now creates a new synchronized local folder right away. This addresses the issue when previously you had to re-download entire folder from the beginning in case if connection breaks during an initial downloading when setting up sync for a large folder. Now you can simply resume from where it failed.
  • Sync feature now attaches an existing local folder with existing files to a new sync record instead of creating a new empty folder. This addresses the issue when previously you had to upload a large collection of local files to a server, just to download them again to set up sync for this collection. Now you can create an empty folder with the same name on a server, and sync it to an existing local folder with existing local files.
  • new sync conflict action - "Discard this conflict, files are identical". This action allows to avoid unnecessary transfer if there is a formal sync conflict, but you know for sure that files are identical. Also useful for initial syncing of already existing identical files.

v.3.4.0, 3.4.1

PDF Annotations:

  • Annotations Summary is now available - you can browse a file's annotations list, EMail it or print it via AirPrint
  • Typewriter tool with optional callouts is now available - print your notes directly on a page, point your callouts to wherever needed
  • Typewriter notes (text boxes) can be enhanced with any fill color and border, including "cloudy"
  • Squiggly underlines can now be used to markup text
  • Author field can now be set in app settings, to tag your own annotations in a summary list

Other improvements:

  • PDF and TXT bookmark names can now be edited
  • Smart File Rename now hides filename extension during renaming, while still allowing to change it if necessary

v.3.3.0, 3.3.1

Synchronization with remote servers:

  • sync with iDisk, Dropbox, SugarSync and any WebDAV or FTP server
  • entire folders as well as individual files can be synced separately
  • you can set up many different files/folders to be synced with different servers. Later you can either sync them individually, or sync them all at once by pressing just one button.

Various sync parameters can be adjusted:

  • file/folder deletion can be prohibited separately for local and remote files
  • a choice of options is available for sync conflicts - "Ask what to do", "Leave unresolved", "Local files have priority", "Remote files have priority", "Create duplicates"

Downloading-related improvements:

  • SugarSync support
  • web browser can now be locked with a password
  • entire folders can now be downloaded from remote servers, no need to download files one-by-one now
  • several files and folders can now be downloaded from remote servers at once - select what you need to download and press the "Download" button
  • files and folders downloaded from remote servers can now be saved to any folder, not only to "My Documents"
  • iPad only: files downloaded with web browser are now saved to the current folder
  • files and folders can now be uploaded to servers with Overwrite option, no need to delete old ones before uploading
  • downloading of files is now continued on the background for several minutes

Other improvements:

  • file lists can now be sorted by name, size and date, both ascending and descending orders are available
  • PDF files: faster text search in large files - for some files it's now twice as fast as it used to be
  • PDF Annotations: squares, circles and polygons can now be converted into "cloudy" shapes and back
  • PDF Crop Margins feature now offers the "Crop to current view" button: zoom in and pan to whatever you'd like to see on the screen after the cropping, and this button will crop out the rest, making the cropped page's aspect ratio match the screen's one
  • PDF: "Fit to width" preference can now be set separately for portrait and landscape modes
  • iPad only: pictures imported from Photo Roll are now saved to the current folder
  • other minor improvements and bug fixes
iPadiPhone
v.3.2.0

By popular demand, the switch that allows to choose between new and old PDF displaying engines is available in Settings. Switch back to the original GoodReader PDF engine if for some reason the new one doesn't work for you.

Introducing Higher quality images switch in Settings for PDF files. If you updated to iOS 4.2, you could have noticed a degraded quality of scanned images in PDF files. This is due to a new way of iOS handling PDF images. "Higher quality images" switch is there to bring the original scans quality back. However, it impacts rendering performance noticeably. So try this switch to see which option suits your needs better.

Other new features:

  • wireless printing: AirPrint support (iOS 4.2 or later)
  • actions available without closing a file - "Open In...", E-Mail, Print
  • PDF Night Mode brightness slider is now available directly in a viewer, no need to adjust it in Settings any more
  • PDF Annotations: adjustable line thickness for drawings
  • PDF Annotations: adjustable opacity for drawings
  • PDF Annotations: popup text notes are now visible on an external VGA display
  • images can now be deleted without closing the image viewer

Bug fixes:

  • fixed the PDF Night Mode flickering bug
  • fixed the bug that sometimes turned PDF pages into black
  • fixed the issue with crashing in freehand drawing mode
  • fixed the issue with accessing some WebDAV servers based on Microsoft IIS engine

v.3.1.2
  • PDF displaying engine patch

v.3.1.0
  • iOS 4.2 compatibility (multitasking support for iPad version)
  • new PDF displaying engine - zooming/panning is a lot smoother now
  • Repair a PDF File feature. Some damaged files that previously caused GoodReader to display an "Unknown PDF Error" message (and could not be annotated for that matter), can now be automatically repaired.
  • support for 256-bit AES encryption in PDF files (iOS 4.2 or later)
  • fixed the issue when annotations created in GoodReader were missing when printing files later from a computer (you'll need to somehow modify old annotations to fix them, any modification - placement, color, etc. - will make them "printable")

iPad + iPhone
v.3.0.2, 3.0.3
  • now encrypted PDF files can also be annotated

v.3.0.0, 3.0.1

Major update introducing major new feature - PDF Annotations, including notes, highlights, markups and drawings (iOS 3.2 or later):

  • all annotations that you create or edit in GoodReader - notes, highlights, markups, and drawings - are saved in a PDF file, so you will be able to see them later on a computer or in another copy of GoodReader on your colleague's device
  • all notes, highlights, markups, and drawings created outside GoodReader, and properly stored in a PDF file, can be viewed or edited in GoodReader
  • types of annotations that you can create and edit in GoodReader: comments ("sticky notes") with 7 different icons, text highlights, freehand drawings, lines, arrows, rectangles, ovals, text underlines, text deletion marks (strikeouts), text insertion marks, text replacement marks. You can freely adjust color of all of the above.
  • other types of annotations that you can view in GoodReader: text boxes with callouts, polygons and polylines, "squiggly" underlines, "cloudy" shapes, rubber stamps, file attachments. All annotations that can be viewed, can also be deleted. In addition, some of them can be edited in a limited fashion (color, placement, scale).
  • you can now extract files from PDF file attachments
  • two main gestures that you should use to work with annotations - single tap, and tap & hold. Depending on where you tap (on a text, on an existing annotation, or on a free space on a page), different menus will be presented to you.

Other important improvements and new features:

  • now you can select text directly on a PDF page. Tap on a text and hold your finger for a while. You can then copy it to the clipboard, or create markups for it (highlights, underlines, strikeouts, etc.)
  • certain not very large files were known to consistently crash GoodReader (as well as other PDF reader apps) for no apparent reason. This was the issue with iOS 3.x. We have resolved this issue. It shouldn't be a problem now, even if you're still on iOS 3.x.
  • now we can hide PDF watermarks (adjustable option in settings)
  • certain button images in place of PDF links that were not shown before, are now shown correctly

And some other nice things:

  • you can now choose which minimum zoom ratio you prefer for PDF pages - fit to screen or fit to width (an option in settings)
  • we have lifted the limitation for a size of files being extracted from PDF Portfolios. Now we're able to extract files of any size. Just make sure that you have enough of free disk space!
  • now when you copy a file to the same location as the original, a copy is created. Very handy if you want to annotate a PDF file, but also want to leave the original file unchanged.
  • a workaround for the issue when WiFi was conflicting with Bluetooth (slow WiFi connection, occasional WiFi signal drops when Bluetooth switch is on, etc.) was finally found. Now there should be no conflict between WiFi and Bluetooth when working in GoodReader.
